The saxophone is a popular instrument for students interested in jazz and clasical music. It is generally suitable for those aged ten or above. There are four types of saxophones: soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. Alto and tenor are the most common. The saxophone is primarily known for jazz, but it can also play classical music beautifully. Saxophones play in symphonic bands, brass bands and jazz bands as well as being common in popular music. Having a good understanding of the recorder is a helpful stepping stone. Playing the clarinet makes for an easy transition to the saxophone as the clarinet and saxophone share similar techniques and fingerings.

Prior knowledge of the recorder is an advantage but not essential.
